About our Church
Over it’s 105-year history, Morning Star Baptist Church has remained true to it’s name- a guiding light for all those who enter….AND THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!
In 1917, several families migrated from the south and settled in Kiskimere. There was no church so the Christian families had Sunday school and church in various homes until Rev. A.B. Crawford and Rev. R.L. Lawhorn (A.M.E. Church) and Rev. I.H. Hill and Deacon Samuel Hart (Baptist Church) decided to ask Mr. L.W. Hicks (owner of Hicks coal company and several coal mines and camps throughout Western Pennsylvania) to build a church. Mr. Hicks was very receptive to the idea and soon had a church built in Kiskimere.
Morning Star Baptist had a uniqueness about it- “people coming together.” There were three denominations using one church: Methodist- first Sunday; Sanctified- second Sunday; Baptist- third Sunday; and Catholics held Sunday school every Sunday evening. Regardless of presiding faith, all denominations returned each Sunday to worship together. Eighteen months after the church was built, the Brock family moved to Kiskimere from Virginia. Hattie Brock was elected Church Clerk and asked to name the new church after the first church of which she became a member- The Morning Star Baptist Church.
After several decades of faithful use, the original classic clapboard church was razed and a larger church was built of concrete blocks to include a sanctuary, office, kitchen, fellowship hall/dining room, 2 lavatories, and ample storage space. One of the highlights of the new church was the installation of an oil furnace, making it no longer necessary for members to take turns each Sunday preparing the pot-bellied coal stove for the day’s worship service.
In 1970, the cornerstone of the present Morning Star Baptist Church was dedicated. In 1998, several improvements were made to the church including construction of a ramp for the physically challenged and purchase of cushions for the pews. Renovation has been made to accommodate the Pastor’s Study, and the installation of five ceiling fans/light fixtures in the sanctuary, along with other on-going improvements.
